Ludo Rules: Complete Guide for Beginners & Experts
Learn the complete rules of Ludo from basics to advanced gameplay. Everything you need to know about rolling dice, moving tokens, capturing opponents, and winning the game.
What Is Ludo?
Ludo is a classic board game for 2 to 4 players, derived from the ancient Indian game Pachisi. Each player has 4 tokens that start in their base. The goal is to move all your tokens around the board and into your home column before your opponents do. Ludo combines luck (dice rolling) with strategy (choosing which token to move), making it enjoyable for players of all ages.
The Ludo Board
A standard Ludo board is cross-shaped with four colored quadrants — typically Red, Green, Yellow, and Blue. Each quadrant has a base (starting area), a home column (final stretch), and a home (center destination). The main track consists of cells that all players share, plus safe cells marked with stars where tokens cannot be captured.
Setting Up the Game
- Choose your color: Each player picks a color (Red, Green, Yellow, or Blue). On Ludo Race, colors are assigned automatically.
- Place tokens in base: All 4 tokens start in your colored base area.
- Determine who goes first: Players take turns rolling the dice. On Ludo Race, turn order is assigned randomly.
How to Play: Step by Step
Rolling the Dice
On your turn, roll the dice by tapping the dice button. The number shown determines how many cells you can move a token forward.
Bringing Tokens Out of Base
To move a token from your base onto the starting cell, you must roll a 6. This is the only way to enter the game. Rolling a 6 also grants you an extra turn, so you can immediately roll again after bringing a token out.
Moving Tokens
After rolling, choose which token to move forward by the number of spaces shown on the dice. If you have multiple tokens on the board, you can move any one of them. If only one token has a valid move, it moves automatically.
Capturing Opponents
If your token lands on a cell occupied by an opponent's token (on a regular cell, not a safe cell), the opponent's token is sent back to their base. They must roll a 6 again to bring it back out. Capturing is a key strategic element of Ludo.
Safe Cells
Cells marked with stars are safe cells. Tokens on safe cells cannot be captured. These cells are strategically important — use them as rest stops when opponents are threatening your tokens.
The Home Column
Once a token completes a full circuit of the board, it enters your home column — a colored path that only you can use. Tokens in the home column are safe from capture. You must roll the exact number to move a token into the home (center).
Winning the Game
The first player to move all their tokens into the home wins. In Standard mode on Ludo Race, you need all 4 tokens home. In Quick mode, only 2 tokens are required, making for faster games.
Special Rules
- Rolling a 6: Grants an extra turn. You can use it to bring a new token out or advance an existing one.
- No valid moves: If no token can move the number shown on the dice, your turn is skipped.
- Exact roll to finish: A token must land exactly on the home cell. If you roll too high, you cannot move that token.
Quick Mode vs Standard Mode
Ludo Race offers two modes:
- Standard (4 tokens): The classic experience. Get all 4 tokens home to win. Games typically last 20-40 minutes.
- Quick (2 tokens): A faster variant. Only 2 tokens need to reach home. Games finish in 10-20 minutes, perfect for quick sessions.
