10 Ludo Strategy Tips to Win Every Game

Master Ludo with these 10 proven strategy tips. Learn when to move which token, how to use safe cells, and advanced tactics to dominate every game of Ludo Race.

Why Strategy Matters in Ludo

Many people think Ludo is purely a game of luck because it relies on dice rolls. While luck plays a role, experienced players know that strategic decision-making is what separates consistent winners from the rest. Every time you roll the dice, you choose which token to move — and that choice can make all the difference. Here are 10 proven strategies to help you win more games on Ludo Race.

1. Spread Your Tokens Early

When you roll a 6 and have tokens still in base, always consider bringing a new token out. Having multiple tokens on the board gives you more options on every subsequent roll. If you only have one token in play, most rolls are forced moves with no strategic choice. With 3 or 4 tokens active, you can pick the best move for each situation.

2. Use Safe Cells Wisely

Safe cells (marked with stars) protect your tokens from being captured. When you have a choice between landing on a safe cell or a regular cell, prioritize the safe cell — especially if opponents' tokens are nearby. Safe cells act as rest stops where you can wait for a better roll without risk.

3. Capture When You Can

Sending an opponent's token back to base is one of the most powerful moves in Ludo. It costs them multiple turns to recover. Always look for capture opportunities, but weigh the risk: moving a token forward to capture might leave it exposed on a non-safe cell afterward.

4. Prioritize Tokens Near Home

Once a token enters your home column, it cannot be captured. If you have a token close to the home column, prioritize moving it in. Every token safely home is one less thing to worry about and brings you closer to victory.

5. Block Opponents When Possible

If two of your tokens land on the same cell, they form a block that opponents cannot pass or capture. Use blocks strategically on key cells to slow down opponents while you advance your other tokens. Blocking near an opponent's home column entry is especially effective.

6. Be Patient With Your Last Token

When you have only one token left to bring home, play conservatively. Keep it on safe cells when possible and avoid risky positions. One capture at this stage can cost you the game, since your opponent might finish while you recover.

7. Use Extra Turns From Rolling 6

Rolling a 6 grants an extra turn — use it wisely. If you have tokens in base and tokens on the board, decide whether bringing a new token out or advancing an existing one is more valuable. Remember: three consecutive 6s send a token back to base in many Ludo variants, so be aware of house rules.

8. Watch Your Opponents' Positions

Always be aware of where opponent tokens are. If an enemy token is 1-6 cells behind yours, your token is in danger. Move it to a safe cell or advance it out of range. Conversely, if your token is behind an opponent's, look for capture opportunities with your next rolls.

9. Choose Quick Mode for Faster Practice

Ludo Race offers Quick mode (2 tokens) alongside Standard mode (4 tokens). Quick mode games finish faster and let you practice strategic thinking more frequently. Play Quick mode to sharpen your skills, then apply those strategies in Standard mode for more complex games.

10. Stay Calm and Think Ahead

The best Ludo players don't just react to each roll — they think ahead. Consider what dice values would be best for your next move and position your tokens accordingly. If you can set up multiple good outcomes regardless of what you roll, you're playing at a high level.
